Soul icon Aretha Franklin has pancreatic cancer, her family announced Wednesday. Franklins relatives revealed the news after the 68 year old star had surgery of an undisclosed nature last Thursday at a Detroit area hospital. After the procedure Franklin declared the surgery a success and made a statement to fans thanking God her surgeons and her supporters The day after her surgery Franklin visited with Reverend Jesse Jackson She’s doing very well Jackson told The Detroit News. Speculation about Franklins poor health began in November when the Queen of Soul announced she was taking six months off under doctor’s orders but did not reveal her medical condition. In October, Franklin was hospitalized and released for another mysterious ailment, and earlier this year she was admitted for treatment after breaking several ribs in a fall outside her home. She was forced to cancel several tour dates in New York as a result
While pancreatic cancer has a notoriously low survival rate an estimated 36,800 are expected to die from the disease this year alone recovery is more likely the earlier it is discovered. Actors Patrick Swayze and Michael Landon both died from this form of cancer, but Apple CEO Steve Jobs is one of the many survivors of the disease
