General Mills To Label US Products With Genetically Modified Ingredients
American food manufacturer General Mills announced on Friday that it will begin labelling all its products in the United States that has genetically modified organisms as ingredients. The move was prompted by a new state law in Vermont, which requires companies to put such information starting July 1.
However, the company cannot label products for only one state without driving up costs for consumers, said General Mills Vice President Jeff Harmening, so the company's response is to put up labels nationwide.
Still, Harmening said one thing is needed to tackle the issue of genetically modified food: a national solution.
"All sides of this debate, 20 years of research, and every major health and safety agency in the world agree that GMOs are not a health or safety concern," said Harmening. "At the same time, we know that some consumers are interested in knowing which products contain GMO ingredients."
The Senate recently blocked a bill that would invalidate state and local efforts that require manufacturers to label products with genetically modified organisms. The bill would have given food makers the choice to disclose GMO ingredients.
Another spokesperson for General Mills said the company's move does not indicate that it is backing away from its call for a national standard on GMO labelling.
"We have essentially run out of time," said Mary Lynn Carver. "We have no other choice. Our supply system doesn't work state-by-state."
The Minneapolis-based company has added a search tool on its website, which will provide GMO ingredient information for its U.S. products.
Incidentally, General Mills is the maker of products including Haagen-Dazs ice cream, Nature Valley granola bars, Cheerios cereal, and many others. The labels will hit grocery stores over the next several weeks.
Meanwhile, the Grocery Manufacturers Association, an advocate against food labeling and [...]
With the FDA ramping up attacks on natural medicine companies, and social media giants like FB and Twitter increasingly censoring discussions about natural immunity and alternative medicine treatments, it seems to be only a matter of time before the totalitarian medical regime outlaws free speech about natural medicine.
That's the direction it's all heading, sadly. And there have already been efforts to criminalize online discussions of nutrition. For example, in North Carolina, this blogger was threatened with arrest and imprisonment for advocating the Paleo Diet in text he posted online. (Yeah, government bureaucrats want to make discussions of the Paleo Diet a CRIME!)
Today, Dr. Michael T. Murray, a fearless pioneer of the natural medicine movement, launches his Natural Medicine Summit. There are a thousand reasons to hear and absorb this information, but one of the most crucial reasons of all is that this information could be outlawed in the near future.
Mainstream media wages full assault on everything "natural"
Under the system of totalitarian, monopolistic medicine that now dominates our society and economy, the relentless attacks on health and natural medicine have become increasingly insane and cult-like in their demands. For example, CNN recently ran a feature story attacking breastfeeding, claiming that calling breastfeeding "natural" might cause women to pursue other "natural" solutions that might drive them away from pharmaceuticals, GMOs and toxic vaccines (all of which CNN promotes).
In that story, CNN demanded that we stop calling breastfeeding "natural" while making sure that all children are injected with toxic chemicals in the form of vaccines. That's how insane the "anti-natural" propagandists have become: they even hate the word NATURAL, and they want women to think that "natural" is BAD!
Natural medicine now legitimately threatens the profit monopolies of the criminal pharmaceutical cartels
Yet even as the anti-natural propagandists work their insidious linguistic voodoo to manipulate women away from health and wellness, the natural medicine movement now threatens the disease profit monopolies of the establishment medical system. Big Pharma's billions in profits are now at risk as a wave of people are waking up to the truth about natural medicine: It works better, safer and more affordably than toxic pharmaceuticals. And in some cases, you can even grow your own medicine that makes Big Pharma's toxic drugs totally obsolete.
Because of the mass awakening to natural medicine, the attacks on the industry will be heightened and made more extremist at every level. The establishment medical cartel will attempt every tactic imaginable to criminalize, intimidate and silence proponents of natural medicine as a way to safeguard their disease profit monopolies that literally depend on hundreds of millions of people remaining sick and diseased in order to lock in their profits.
The drug industry realizes that if p [...]
Canadian U.S. presidential candidate and Texas senator Ted Cruz went all-in for Monsanto on the campaign trail in Iowa, parroting Monsanto's propaganda by proclaiming that GMOs are feeding the world while insulting health-conscious consumers by equating support of GMO labeling with "anti-science zealotry."
At the Iowa Agricultural Summit, Cruz revealed that he in effect fully supports the mass poisoning of the American people with hidden (unlabeled) GMOs, cancer-causing glyphosate herbicide, farmer suicides caused by GMO crop failures and the widespread genetic pollution unleashed by genetically modified crops. "[W]e shouldn’t let anti-science zealotry shutdown the ability to produce low-cost quality food for billions across the globe," he stated, invoking a false claim that's actually a widely disproven Monsanto talking point. (SOURCE)
Hilariously, in making that statement, Ted Cruz also implies that he is literate on scientific issues. This alone is highly questionable. He may be a brilliant constitutional scholar and student of the law, but he knows next to nothing about the health effects, environmental impacts and genetic pollution risk of GM crops. He could start by reading Altered Genes, Twisted Truth: How the Venture to Genetically Engineer Our Food Has Subverted Science, Corrupted Government, and Systematically Deceived the Public.
For the record, my own book, Food Forensics, comes out this July and also covers GMOs and glyphosate.
The right to bear arms but not to read accurate food labels
In choosing Monsanto over the health and food freedom of the American people, Ted Cruz joins Hillary Clinton as a Frankenfood pusher who believes that Americans should not only be fed cancer-causing herbicide chemicals that are being banned all across the globe; he also apparently believes that the American people have no right to know whether they're even eating toxic GMOs.
As Natural News readers know very well, I am a supporter of the Second Amendment and believe that the right for law-abiding citizens to acquire firearms shall not be infringed by government. Ted Cruz agrees with this particular position, but he opposes the right of citizens to have access to honest food labels that describe the GMO content of the food they're buying. And in this, he is demonstrating his disturbing failure to think with consistency.
In effect, Ted Cruz believes that Americans have the right to buy a gun, but not to read a label. Apparently GMOs are far more dangerous than guns in the mind of Ted Cruz, because GMOs must be hidden from the public even as guns are readily accessible.
While people like Ted Cruz routinely invoke the right of self defense against violence as one justification for access to firearms, he simultaneously denies the right of self defense against chemical violence by failing to support the public's access to accurate GMO labels. (You can have a GUN, in other words, but you're not allowed to have a LABEL.)

In a decision made public late Friday, a Thurston County Superior Court judge ruled the Grocery Manufacturer’s Association violated Washington campaign finance disclosure laws by shielding the identities of major corporate donors funding efforts to defeat a food labeling initiative in Washington.
“This landmark case has been a long fight for accountability,” Attorney General Bob Ferguson said. “This ruling sends an unequivocal message: Big money donors cannot evade Washington law and hide from public scrutiny. My office will hold you accountable.”
The case, State v. Grocery Manufacturers Association, concerns GMA’s financing of a 2013 campaign against Initiative 522, which sought to require labeling of genetically engineered products. GMA, a Washington, D.C.-based trade association, was the largest single donor to the “No on 522” political committee.
GMA raised $14 million from its members in solicitations for a new “Defense of Brands” account, above and beyond regular member dues. PepsiCo, for example, contributed nearly $3 million to the account, and Nestle and Coca-Cola upwards of $2 million each.
GMA then donated $11 million of the $14 million from corporations to “No on 522.” In an effort to shield individual companies from required disclosure, the money was listed as coming from GMA, not the actual donors, such as Pepsi, Nestle and Coke.
“In enacting the Public Campaign Finance Laws, the people of Washington directed that they be interpreted liberally, to promote transparency and full disclosure to the voters,” Judge Anne Hirsch’s decision reads. “By its actions creating the [Defense of Brands] account, the GMA violated the spirit and letter of Washington’s Public Campaign Finance Laws.”
The court also determined that there remains a factual dispute whether GMA’s violation of the law was intentional. The court, therefore, did not determine what penalty would be imposed at this point in the proceedings, and the case will continue to trial on the disputed facts. Under the law, sanctions for campaign finance disclosure violations can include a penalty equal to the amount not reported as required. If the court finds that the violation was intentional, that penalty amount can be tripled.
Ferguson filed the lawsuit against GMA in October 2013. Internal GMA documents released as a result of this lawsuit revealed a systematic effort to conceal the true sources of $11 million in contributions to oppose I-522.
For example, meeting minutes from the GMA Board’s Finance and Audit Committee meeting show a discussion on the creation of the “Defense of Brands Strategic Account,” largely to oppose I-522: “By doing so, state GMO related spending will be identified as having come from GMA, which will provide anonymity and eliminate state filing requirements for contributing members.” In a GMA Executive Committee meeting, the Executive Vice President for Government Affairs note [...]
In a tale of Brussels corruption almost too crass to believe, the Commission of the European Union is ready to approve a new license for a proven carcinogen, glyphosate, despite international warnings from WHO and independent scientists that it is toxic to humans and animals. Only huge protest has forced the EU to make a surprise postponement of its planned vote to re-approve.
EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Vytenis Andriukaitis, postponed re-licensing of glyphosate this month not because of his taking a morally courageous stand by going against the corrupt EU Commission food safety advisory group, EFSA, and banning renewal of the license for the world’s most widely-used weed-killer, glyphosate. He’s fully ready to approve the substance. This, despite the fact that a scientific panel of the World Health Organization labeled glyphosate in 2015 as a probable human and animal carcinogen. He postponed only because four EU member states, unexpectedly, refused to approve renewal. Now Andriukaitis and the GMO weed-killer cartel are scheming to find a new way to ram the renewal through.
Glyphosate is a highly toxic chemical that is the major component of Monsanto’s Roundup weed-killer, the world’s most used weed-killer. In other combinations glyphosate is also sold by most every agrochemical company in the world including BASF, Syngenta, Dow Chemical, DuPont and China’s Zhejiang Wynca Chemical.
Originally developed in a form combined with ultra-toxic adjuvant chemicals by Monsanto chemist John Franz in the 1970’s, it soon became the most widely used weed-killer used in the USA and the EU. Today glyphosate is paired with glyphosate-resistant GMO plants such as Monsanto “Roundup Ready” (glyphosate-resistant) soybeans or corn. All GMO plants of Monsanto, for example, by contract, must use Monsanto’s glyphosate-based weed-killer Roundup, as in “round up them ugly weeds pardna, an kill ‘em all!”
The problem as far as re-licensing glyphosate-based weed-killers is that in March 2015 the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic in humans” based on epidemiological, animal, and in vitro studies.
IARC conducted an independent and extensive review of all the publicly available evidence linking glyphosate to cancer. IARC is specifically qualified to conduct such a review, and it has done so for forty years on behalf of the WHO. It has evaluated hundreds of chemicals, and is regarded as the authoritative body by governments around the world. Non-industry experts testify as to its integrity and scientific credibility.
As more evidence of the high toxicity of glyphosate in combination with other undisclosed additive boosting toxic chemicals, or adjuvants, comes to the light, attention by environmental and health organizations to the danger of a 15 year renewal of license in the EU for glyphosate is intense.
Were the EU to deny license to glypho [...]
Residents of the Hawaiian Islands just breathed a sigh of relief – literally, as the deadline passed for Hawaii’s House Judiciary Committee to hear House Bill 849, relating to Right to Farm, that would force residents to succumb to pesticide spraying without any say. All the while, companies like Monsanto, Dow, Syngenta, and BASF use Hawaii land as a testing ground for GM crops.
Bill 849 amends Hawaii’s Right to Farm Act to ensure that counties cannot enact laws, ordinances, or resolutions to limit the rights of farmers and ranchers to engage in agricultural practices – including spraying with carcinogenic pesticides.
Hundreds of citizens called and wrote letters to state legislators urging them to stop giving Monsanto, one of the largest lobbyists in the Islands, permission to continue spraying pesticides, especially near their schools, homes, and hospitals.
Lorna Cummings Poe, a Kaua‘i resident whose daughter and granddaughters are impacted by pesticide drift in Kekaha on the island’s west side, said: [...]
senior scientist at MIT has declared that we are facing an epidemic of autism that may result in one half of all children being affected by autism in ten years.
Dr. Stephanie Seneff, who made these remarks during a panel presentation in Groton, MA last week, specifically cites the Monsanto herbicide, Roundup, as the culprit for the escalating incidence of autism and other neurological disorders. Roundup, which was introduced in the 1970’s, contains the chemical glyphosate, which is the focal point for Seneff’s concerns. Roundup was originally restricted to use on weeds, as glyphosate kills plants. However, Roundup is now in regular use with crops. With the coming of GMO’s, plants such as soy and corn were bioengineered to tolerate glyphosate, and its use dramatically increased. From 2001 to 2007, glyphosate use doubled, reaching 180 to 185 million pounds in the U.S. alone in 2007.
If you don’t consume corn- on- the -cob or toasted soybeans, however, you are hardly exempt from the potential affects of consuming glyphosate. Wheat is now sprayed with Roundup right before it is harvested, making any consumption of non- organic wheat bread a sure source for the chemical. In addition, any products containing corn syrup, such as soft drinks, are also carrying a payload of glyphosate.
According to studies cited by Seneff, glyphosate engages “gut bacteria” in a process known as the shikimate pathway. This enables the chemical to interfere with the biochemistry of bacteria in our GI tract, resulting in the depletion of essential amino acids .
Monsanto has maintained that glyphosate is safe for human consumption, as humans do not have the shikimate pathway. Bacteria, however, does—including the flora that constitutes “gut bacteria.”
It is this ability to affect gut bacteria that Seneff claims is the link which allows the chemical to get on board and wreak further damage. The connection between intestinal flora and neurological functioning is an ongoing topic of research. According to a number of studies, glyphosate depletes the amino acids tyrosine, tryptophan, and phenylalanine, which can then contribute to obesity, depression, autism, inflammatory bowel disease, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
Monsanto disagrees. The food and chemical giant has constructed a webpage with links to scientific studies pronouncing the safety of glyphosate.
Other science writers have also taken up the Monsanto banner, scoffing at the scientific studies that prompted Seneff to make her claims. “They made it up!” pronounced Huffpost science writer Tamar Haspel, in an article thin on analysis but heavy on declarative prose.
Others, such as Skeptoid writer and PhD physicist Eric Hall, take a more measured approach, and instead focus on the studies which prompted the glyphosate concerns. According to Hall, Seneff is making an error known as the “correlation/causation error,” in which causality is inaccurately concluded when there exists only the fact that [...]
China has just dished out the biggest fine in the history of their country, and it's being slapped down on one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the world.
GlaxoSmithKline, the British pharmaceutical giant that medical authorities trust in around the world, is now being exposed for what it really is: an institution rooted in coercion and bribery that competes for control over healthcare systems around the world.
According to Chinese news agency Xinhua, GlaxoSmithKline is guilty of bribing doctors and hospitals in order to have their products promoted. The verdict, established in a court in Changsha, slaps the UK pharmaceutical firm with a $490 million fine, the largest in China's history. This puts an end to an investigation that began in July of 2013. Chinese officials estimate that GSK made $150 million in illegal profits.
Mark Reilly, GSK's former head of Chinese operations, is now facing a three-year prison sentence; he's set to be deported. In the aftermath of the ruling, other top GSK executives await suspended jail sentences.
Understanding how bribery runs entire medical systems and how civil obedience feeds the coercion
By bribing hospitals and doctors with their deep pockets, GSK is able to control entire medical systems from the top. This means that a vaccine or a drug manufactured at their factories might not even be sound medicine at all. These vaccines and drugs are only promoted as medicine because giants like GSK have the money to control and influence hospitals and doctors who simply accept the bribe money because they just need the money to stay in business. This type of coercion lifts bad medicine up on a pedestal, as bribe money trickles down through the entire healthcare industry.
At the end of the line is a confused consumer, not understanding why they are experiencing such strange side effects from such highly promoted drugs.
Hospitals and doctors just accept it as the way it is, because they have bills to pay. All the while, drug company ads fill the TV screen, the radio broadcasts and the magazine pages. If blindly promoting GSK's products brings in the cash, then who cares if these drug actually heal? It doesn't matter whether this medicine is actually rooted in sound science.
Bad medicine isn't necessarily a conspiracy to hurt and kill people (although it ultimately does); bad medicine is based in keeping simple economics alive using industry bribery and efficient collusion of big business. This corruption ultimately trickles down through the ranks. People working in the industry simply do what they are told, hoping not to upset the structure that keeps profits rolling in.
Instead of thinking what's best for the institution that employs them, medical professionals must start questioning where the money's coming from, who pays to have the drug safety studies conducted, and why they are actually promoting and prescribing concoctions that a drug company has to bribe on them in the first pla [...]
Just one day after much of the world celebrated Valentine's Day this year, the nation of Russia enacted an embargo on all imports of corn and soy products originating in the U.S., say reports. Following through with promises earlier made in defiance of genetically-modified organisms (GMOs), Russian President Vladimir Putin says his country will no longer accept transgenic corn and soy imports due to safety and environmental concerns.
In 2013, President Putin met with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry to discuss the issue, in which he expressed "extreme outrage" over the Obama Administration's continued protection of bio-piracy corporations like Monsanto and Syngenta, which are spreading bootlegged seeds and crop chemicals throughout the world. One of President Putin's biggest concerns is the continued decline in bee populations, which has been repeatedly linked to pesticide and herbicide use.
Russia's hostile feelings towards GMOs and crop chemicals are also shared by China, which enacted its own embargoes in 2015 to protect its bees and food supply against contamination. All across the globe, countries that haven't been taken over by multinational seed corporations are taking a stand against GMOs and crop chemicals, and it's cutting into U.S. commodity exports in a major way.
"Restrictions will be imposed on imports starting from February 15," Assistant Director of the watchdog group Rosselkhoznadzor, Alexey Alekseenko, is quoted as saying by Natural Society. "They (the U.S.) have to establish a system to ensure safety of products imported to Russia."
That system currently doesn't exist, warn critics, and likely never will due to heavy lobbying from chemical and seed-modifying corporations, which hold incredible power in Washington, D.C. Their lobbying efforts keep GMOs and crop chemicals from being effectively regulated, which is harming U.S. farmers, who are seeing decreased market potential for their transgenic offerings.
"Since the products shipped from the United States pose a real threat to Russia, and the US guarantees are not valid, we reserve the right to introduce temporary restrictions on imports of US corn and soybeans," Alekseenko added in a quote cited by RT.com.
Russia: U.S. corn and soy low quality, unsafe
Besides the GMO element, U.S. corn and soy products aren't exactly of the highest quality, says [...]
If Monsanto didn’t have enough bad news already—considering its falling stock price, reduced profits, and recent job cuts—California dealt the agribusiness giant a body blow when it announced its intention to label glyphosate (the active ingredient in RoundUp herbicide) as a carcinogen. Comments have been pouring in from health and environmental advocates, as well as from pesticide companies and their various front groups.
California is responding to increased research on the popular herbicide that shows glyphosate to be “probably carcinogen to humans,” according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the World Health Organization (WHO). Although the move would not restrict sales, it would better inform consumers of the risks associated with glyphosate use.
Despite these risks, the European Commission is planning to renew the approval of glyphosate as “safe to use” for another 15 years. Somehow, the European Food Safety Authority found that glyphosate is “unlikely to pose a carcinogenic hazard to humans.”
How could the European Commission come to the opposite conclusion? Fourteen expert scientists published a “Consensus Statement of Concern” in the journal Environmental Health last week provides that answer to that. The damning report also explains how regulatory testing is out of date and the risks of glyphosate are severely underestimated.
The researchers note:
“In the latest glyphosate regulatory assessment process by the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, the description and assessment of studies was provided by the Glyphosate Task Force, a group of 25 agrochemical companies that combined resources to jointly apply for renewal of registrations for this herbicide within Europe. By way of contrast, in order to avoid conflicts of interests, the Glyphosate Task Force was restricted to a role of observer to the evaluation of data by independent scientists at the recent WHO IARC evaluation of glyphosate’s carcinogenic potential.”
In other words, the companies that produce glyphosate also provided the data used by the European Commission to say glyphosate poses no risk. When they were not involved in the evaluation process, in the case of the WHO study, the true risks of glyphosate became apparent.
The scientists go on to say that it is the norm for regulatory bodies to use “unpublished, non-peer reviewed data” produced by companies such as Monsanto who make chemical products. And they ignore a wealth of higher quality, peer-reviewed data.
“Most toxicological studies using advanced, modern tools and experimental designs within molecular genetics, reproductive, developmental, endocrinological, immunological and other disciplines have been undertaken in academic and research institute laboratories, and results have been published in peer-reviewed journals. Regulators have not incorporated, formally or indirectly, such research into their risk assessments. Rather, they rely on un [...]
